The “Grindhouse” Series
Planet Terror | 2007 | dir. Robert Rodriguez
I had no idea what I was getting into when I watched Grindhouse for the first time at age fourteen, but after I finished this first full-length feature, which is extremely over-the-top, silly, and fun, I immediately understood that movies can be good because they are bad, and that was something I never really thought of before seeing Planet Terror.
Death Proof | 2007 | dir. Quentin Tarantino
As for Part Two of the Grindhouse double feature, I enjoy this film as a part of the entire experience (I mean you got fast cars, beautiful women, and REVENGE, so it is pretty hard not to enjoy), but as an individual film, it is by far Tarantino’s weakest.
Machete | 2010 | dir. Robert Rodriguez
Rodriguez’s exploitation film mostly works because it comes right off the heels of Grindhouse, a super over-the-top and funny train wreck, but it also helps that Danny Trejo fully commits to such a ludicrous character.
Hobo With a Shotgun | 2011 | dir. Jason Eisener
Hobo With a Shotgun may not be as funny as Machete, but it feels much more ballsy because it shows absolutely no fear when it decides to become more twisted (killing children with flamethrowers… alright!), plus the action scenes are handled with a lot of respect, occasionally making the film quite thrilling.
Machete Kills | 2013 | dir. Robert Rodriguez
I don’t know if it is because the fad of the celebrity-filled grindhouse film has faded away, but this sequel is pretty awful, and it would have been exponentially better if the plot was less congested, the action more bloody, the look less glossy, and the characters more funny.
After Machete Kills totally flopped at the box office, I would say it is pretty unlikely that Machete Kills Again… In Space! ever comes into existence. Let’s just hope Eli Roth eventually gets around to directing Thanksgiving!
